Arunachal's Gumin Panggeng Makes History as First Kathak Dancer Graded by Doordarshan

Gumin Panggeng, a Kathak artist from Arunachal Pradesh, has been awarded a Doordarshan grading, becoming the first dancer from the state to achieve this recognition. The grading, granted by India's public broadcaster, is a benchmark of artistic excellence and is required for performers to appear on national television platforms.

Doordarshan’s grading system evaluates dancers on technical proficiency, repertoire, and presentation, assigning categories such as B, A, and Top. Panggeng’s attainment of the grade underscores her rigorous training and mastery of the Kathak form, which has traditionally been centered in North Indian cultural hubs.

Born and raised in Arunachal, Panggeng began learning Kathak under the guidance of senior gurus and has performed at several regional festivals. Her achievement is expected to inspire aspiring classical dancers in the Northeast, a region where such art forms have limited exposure.

Panggeng plans to use the grading to secure more national stage opportunities and to conduct workshops aimed at nurturing Kathak talent across Arunachal Pradesh, thereby strengthening the state's presence in India's classical dance landscape.
