The state government of Arunachal Pradesh announced plans to assess the feasibility of geothermal energy projects in its remote, border‑adjacent districts, aiming to provide reliable power to isolated communities.

Arunachal Pradesh's chief minister announced on Monday that the state will conduct a detailed study of geothermal energy potential in its far‑flung, border‑adjacent districts. The move aims to tap a renewable source that could deliver steady electricity to villages currently dependent on diesel generators and intermittent grid supply.

Geothermal resources are considered suitable for the hilly terrain of Arunachal, where underground heat pockets have been identified in several pilot surveys. Officials say the technology could overcome the logistical challenges of extending conventional transmission lines across rugged, sparsely populated areas.

The government has tasked the state energy department, in collaboration with the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy and select research institutes, to carry out feasibility assessments over the next twelve months. If viable sites are confirmed, pilot plants could be commissioned by 2028, providing clean power and reducing the region's carbon footprint while boosting local employment.
