The state government of Arunachal Pradesh has stepped up its sanitation push to secure the ‘Open Defecation Free Plus’ certification under the Swachh Bharat Mission.
Arunachal Pradesh’s administration announced a renewed focus on eliminating open defecation, aiming to meet the criteria for the coveted Open Defecation Free Plus (ODF+) status. The effort builds on the state’s earlier ODF achievement and seeks to upgrade sanitation standards in line with the central government’s Swachh Bharat Mission.
To accelerate progress, officials have mobilised additional resources for constructing household and community toilets, especially in remote villages where access remains limited. Parallel behaviour‑change campaigns are being rolled out in schools, panchayats and local media to encourage consistent toilet use and proper waste management.
The state’s sanitation department is also strengthening monitoring mechanisms, employing digital dashboards and field inspections to track construction quality and usage rates. These steps are intended to ensure that the ODF+ benchmarks—covering not only toilet availability but also sustained hygiene practices—are met before the next national assessment.
If successful, Arunachal Pradesh will join a select group of states recognized for achieving the higher ODF+ standard, reinforcing its commitment to public health and environmental cleanliness.
