Arunachal Pradesh has announced that candidates seeking government employment must possess a Scheduled Tribe certificate and demonstrate proficiency in a tribal language, tightening eligibility criteria.

Arunachal Pradesh has introduced a new rule that will affect all applicants for state government jobs. The policy requires candidates to hold a valid Scheduled Tribe (ST) certificate and to provide evidence of proficiency in a recognized tribal language. The move is aimed at ensuring that the state’s public sector remains representative of its indigenous communities.

Under the new guidelines, applicants will need to submit the ST certificate during the application process and may be asked to take a language test or submit a language proficiency statement. Failure to meet either requirement will disqualify the candidate from consideration.

The government said the change will streamline recruitment and reinforce the state’s commitment to tribal welfare. However, some civil society groups have expressed concerns that the additional hurdle could limit opportunities for non‑tribal candidates who are otherwise qualified.

The policy was announced by the state’s Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms in a press release on Tuesday. Officials said the rule will be implemented from the upcoming recruitment cycle in September.
