An Indian Army major is under disciplinary scrutiny for allegedly courting the wives of fellow officers, a case that raises questions given that adultery is no longer a criminal offence in India.

The Supreme Court’s 2018 ruling that decriminalised adultery has not stopped the Indian Army from taking action against officers who are alleged to breach its code of conduct.

A major in the Indian Army has been placed under disciplinary review after accusations surfaced that he was pursuing romantic relationships with the wives of his fellow officers. The allegations were first reported by a senior officer who claimed that the major had repeatedly expressed affection towards the spouses of two of his peers.

The Army’s disciplinary board has opened an inquiry into the matter, citing potential violations of the Service Rules and the Code of Conduct. While the act of adultery itself is no longer a criminal offence, the conduct is considered unbecoming of an officer and may lead to administrative penalties.

The case highlights the distinction between civil law and military discipline, and underscores the Army’s commitment to maintaining professional standards among its ranks.
