The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority has approved the export of honey produced in Assam to the United States, marking a new trade opportunity for the state's beekeepers.
New Delhi – The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) has given the green light for honey harvested in Assam to be shipped to the United States. The move follows a compliance check that confirmed the product meets U.S. food safety and quality standards.
Assam’s beekeepers, who have been cultivating honey in the state’s forested hills for decades, will now be able to tap into a high‑value export market. APEDA’s facilitation includes assistance with certification, documentation and logistics, aiming to streamline the supply chain from rural apiaries to overseas buyers.
Export officials said the initiative is expected to boost farm‑gate incomes and encourage sustainable beekeeping practices across the region. The United States, a major consumer of premium honey, has shown growing interest in organic and monofloral varieties that Assam can supply.
Stakeholders anticipate that the first shipments could depart within the next few weeks, pending final customs clearance. APEDA will continue to monitor quality compliance to maintain market access.
The development underscores the central government’s push to diversify agricultural exports and strengthen the earnings potential of northeastern states.
