The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority has enabled a shipment of makhana from Purnea, Bihar, to Greece, marking a new market entry for the snack.

New Delhi, Oct 2 (GK Today) – The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) has facilitated the first shipment of makhana, also known as fox nuts, from the town of Purnea in Bihar to Greece. The clearance reflects APEDA’s ongoing efforts to diversify export destinations for Indian agricultural commodities.

The export aligns with the central government’s push to promote Indian super‑foods in overseas markets, especially in regions where health‑conscious consumers are seeking nutritious snack alternatives. Greek importers have shown interest in makhana for its low‑calorie profile and protein content.

Local growers in the Purnea district, a major hub for makhana cultivation, are expected to benefit from the new market link, which could improve farm incomes and encourage further investment in processing infrastructure.

APEDA officials said the agency will continue to support exporters by providing market intelligence, quality certification and logistical assistance to ensure smooth trade flows.

The shipment is seen as a stepping stone for expanding Indian snack exports to Europe, with potential follow‑up consignments under discussion.
