The Andhra Pradesh Food Commission has identified significant shortcomings in the operation of anganwadi centres and welfare hostels, raising concerns over child nutrition and welfare services.
The Andhra Pradesh Food Commission, established to monitor nutrition and food security across the state, conducted a comprehensive audit of anganwadi centres and welfare hostels in early July.
The audit revealed that a large number of anganwadi centres were not meeting the mandated daily rations, with several centres lacking proper storage facilities and regular supply of fortified foods. Similarly, welfare hostels were found to be operating below capacity, with inadequate food quality and insufficient hygiene measures.
These lapses raise serious concerns about the nutritional status of children and the elderly who rely on these facilities. The commission warned that continued neglect could undermine the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) programme and jeopardise the health outcomes of vulnerable populations.
In response, the commission has urged district authorities to conduct immediate remedial actions, including replenishing stock, upgrading storage infrastructure, and enforcing stricter monitoring. A follow‑up inspection is scheduled for the end of August to assess compliance.
