Karnataka BJP stronghold Udupi’s local leader Annamalai has warned the central government about the rising UPI transaction charges, calling for a review of the fee structure.

The Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has become a staple of digital payments across India, but the fees levied on transactions have drawn criticism from several quarters. In the BJP‑dominant district of Udupi, local leader Annamalai has publicly warned the central government that the current fee structure is unsustainable for small merchants and consumers.

Annamalai, who has served as a municipal councillor for over a decade, cited a recent spike in transaction costs that he claims is eroding the competitiveness of Udupi’s retail sector. He urged the Ministry of Finance to revisit the fee caps and to consider a more equitable model that protects the interests of both merchants and end‑users.

The BJP’s state unit has expressed support for Annamalai’s concerns, stating that the party will lobby for a fairer fee regime. However, officials from the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) have maintained that the current rates are aligned with industry standards and are designed to sustain the infrastructure required for nationwide digital payments.

If the central government does not address the issue, merchants in Udupi may face increased costs that could translate into higher prices for consumers, potentially impacting the district’s economic growth and the BJP’s electoral prospects in the region.
