Asian News International has approached a division bench of the Delhi High Court, claiming OpenAI scraped, stored and commercially used its content without permission, violating copyright law.
Asian News International (ANI) filed a petition before a division bench of the Delhi High Court, seeking relief against OpenAI on grounds of copyright infringement. The agency contends that the artificial‑intelligence firm harvested large volumes of its news material, stored the data and subsequently used it in its commercial products without obtaining any licence.
ANI's filing alleges that OpenAI’s data‑training processes involved systematic scraping of the agency’s articles, which are protected under Indian copyright law. By incorporating this material into its generative models, the company is accused of exploiting ANI’s intellectual property for profit, thereby violating the agency’s exclusive rights.
Legal experts note that the case adds to a growing wave of lawsuits worldwide challenging how AI developers source training data. If the court rules in favour of ANI, it could set a precedent for stricter compliance by AI firms with copyright norms in India.
