The Andhra Pradesh High Court has issued a notice to the state government seeking a response on alleged mining activities taking place on land earmarked for a compressed biogas (CBG) plant.

In a recent order, the Andhra Pradesh High Court directed the state government to provide its response to reports that mining activities are underway on a parcel of land reserved for a compressed biogas (CBG) plant. The court noted that the land had been earmarked for a renewable‑energy project and any unauthorized extraction could jeopardise the scheme.

The CBG plant, envisioned to generate clean energy from organic waste, is part of the state’s broader push towards sustainable power. Officials have expressed concern that mining could not only delay the project but also raise environmental and legal issues.

The High Court’s notice asks the government to clarify the status of the mining, the parties involved and the steps being taken to protect the designated site. The matter is slated for further hearing, where the court will assess whether any statutory violations have occurred.

State authorities are expected to submit their reply within the timeframe prescribed by the court, after which appropriate action—ranging from injunctions to penalties—may be considered.
