The inaugural milk freight train loaded with Amul dairy products has completed its journey from Gujarat to Jammu and Kashmir, marking a new logistics milestone for the dairy sector.
A specially commissioned freight train carrying Amul's milk and dairy products has reached Jammu and Kashmir after departing from Gujarat, becoming the first of its kind in the country. The train, part of a pilot logistics project, traversed several states before arriving at the northern region's rail hub, demonstrating the feasibility of long‑distance rail transport for perishable dairy goods.
Amul, India's largest dairy cooperative, launched the service to address challenges of road congestion, high fuel costs and product spoilage during transit. By moving large volumes of milk powder, cheese and other dairy items by rail, the cooperative expects to cut delivery times and lower carbon emissions, benefiting both producers and consumers.
Officials from the Ministry of Railways and Amul officials indicated that the successful run could pave the way for regular milk freight corridors linking major dairy-producing states with distant markets. They highlighted that rail freight offers temperature‑controlled wagons and smoother handling, which are critical for preserving product quality over long distances.
