Amritsar’s Deputy Commissioner inaugurated a mobile outreach programme aimed at stopping the burning of agricultural residue. The launch ceremony, held in the district headquarters, saw the DC raise a green flag, signalling the start of the campaign.
The initiative will deploy specially marked vans that will travel to villages across Amritsar, displaying banners, audio‑visual messages and pamphlets that explain the environmental and health hazards of stubble burning. Local officials and agricultural officers will accompany the vans to answer farmers’ queries and suggest alternative crop‑management practices.
Stubble burning has long plagued the region, contributing to severe air‑quality deterioration during the post‑harvest season. State authorities have previously imposed fines and offered subsidies for mechanised residue removal, but compliance remains low.
