New Delhi – In a televised address, Home Minister Amit Shah described the fight against illicit drugs as the nation’s biggest challenge and presented a detailed roadmap to render India drug‑free by 2029. He emphasized that the strategy combines stricter law enforcement, expanded rehabilitation services, and widespread public awareness campaigns.
The plan calls for the creation of specialised anti‑drug units in every state, the use of advanced surveillance technology to track trafficking networks, and the establishment of additional de‑addiction centres to provide treatment to users. Coordination between central and state agencies, as well as cooperation with neighbouring countries, will be strengthened to curb cross‑border smuggling.
A phased timeline has been set, with the first milestone targeting a 30% reduction in drug‑related arrests and seizures within two years, followed by a gradual increase in rehabilitation capacity. The government aims to monitor progress through quarterly reports and adjust interventions as needed.
Shah urged civil society, educational institutions and the private sector to join the effort, stating that a drug‑free India requires collective responsibility and sustained vigilance.
The roadmap will be presented to the cabinet next week for final approval before implementation begins in early 2025.
