In a speech on Prime Minister Modi’s birthday, Amit Shah outlined a plan to introduce the Unified Civil Code across BJP‑ruled states by 2029.

During a rally held to celebrate Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s birthday, BJP national president Amit Shah addressed the crowd and announced a new initiative to roll out the Unified Civil Code in all states governed by the party before 2029.

Shah explained that the UCC would replace existing personal laws governing marriage, divorce, inheritance and other civil matters, aiming to bring uniformity and gender‑equitable provisions.

The announcement was part of the party’s broader agenda to reform civil law, with the government indicating that the code would be drafted and implemented in phases, starting with the states that have already expressed willingness to adopt it.

The move has drawn attention from legal experts and civil society groups, many of whom are monitoring the proposal for its implications on religious and cultural practices.
