The Jammu & Kashmir government has announced that the Amarnath Yatra will be suspended on both the Chenab and Sindh routes from 9 August 2024. The decision was made by the state’s Home Department after consultations with security and logistics officials.
The Chenab route, which has traditionally carried the majority of pilgrims, and the Sindh route, a newer path opened in recent years, will both be closed to prevent any potential incidents. The government has stated that the closure will remain in effect until further notice.
Officials cited rising security concerns, difficult terrain conditions, and the need for better crowd management as key reasons for the suspension. They also highlighted environmental factors that could impact the fragile Himalayan ecosystem.
