Allahabad High Court has released two men on probation, overturning a 5‑year jail sentence handed down by the trial court, a move that drew criticism from the Supreme Court, which called the case 'misplaced sympathy'.

The Allahabad High Court, sitting in a bench of Justices J B Pardiwala and K Vinod Chandran, has set aside the 5‑year imprisonment awarded by the trial court to two accused men and released them on probation. The decision was taken after a lengthy trial that the court described as a case of misplaced sympathy. The Supreme Court, in a separate judgment, criticised the proceedings, stating that the case was doomed from the outset in terms of delivering justice to the victim. The High Court’s ruling effectively allows the two men to remain free while they await further proceedings, but they are subject to strict monitoring and conditions of probation. The Supreme Court’s remarks underscore concerns about the fairness of the trial and the protection of victims’ rights.
