The municipal corporation of Aizawl, Mizoram, has launched a new waste management scheme that segregates garbage into four distinct categories to improve recycling and reduce landfill.

On 15 September 2024, Aizawl’s municipal corporation unveiled a four‑category waste segregation system aimed at streamlining garbage disposal. The scheme divides refuse into organic, recyclable, hazardous and general waste, each with dedicated collection bins. The initiative is expected to cut landfill usage by 30% and boost recycling rates. Residents will receive separate bins and are encouraged to sort waste at source. The city administration plans to monitor the program’s impact over the next year.
