AIIMS hands over AI tool for early breast cancer detection to BPL

AIIMS has transferred an artificial‑intelligence system designed to spot breast cancer at an early stage to BPL for commercial deployment.
The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi has completed development of an artificial‑intelligence algorithm that can analyze mammograms and flag potential breast cancer cases much earlier than conventional methods. After extensive clinical validation, the institute handed the technology over to BPL, a private firm, to scale up production and integrate it into existing diagnostic workflows.
AIIMS officials said the AI model was trained on thousands of imaging datasets and demonstrated a high sensitivity and specificity in pilot studies, reducing false‑negative rates significantly. The collaboration aims to make the tool affordable for hospitals across the country, especially in tier‑2 and tier‑3 regions where radiology expertise is scarce.
BPL plans to launch the solution as a software‑as‑a‑service platform within the next few months, offering cloud‑based access to clinics and diagnostic centres. Both parties emphasized that the technology will complement, not replace, radiologists, enhancing early detection and improving treatment outcomes for Indian women.
The initiative aligns with the government's push for digital health innovations and could contribute to lowering the breast‑cancer mortality rate, which remains a public‑health concern nationwide.
