AICWA President Urges Independent SIT Probe in Sanchita Ugale Death Case

The president of the All India Congress Women’s Association met Maharashtra’s Home Minister to request an independent Special Investigation Team probe into the death of Sanchita Ugale.

On 18 July 2026, the president of the All India Congress Women’s Association (AICWA) met Maharashtra Home Minister Ashok Chavan in Mumbai to discuss the unresolved death of Sanchita Ugale, a 28‑year‑old resident of Pune. The meeting followed weeks of public outcry over the lack of clarity surrounding Ugale’s demise, which police had initially ruled a suicide.

Ugale’s family and activists allege that the police investigation was incomplete and that key evidence was mishandled. They argue that an independent Special Investigation Team (SIT) would bring impartial scrutiny to the case.

During the discussion, the AICWA president formally requested the state government to appoint an SIT and to ensure that the probe be conducted without interference from local police units. The request also included a demand for a public report on the findings.

Home Minister Chavan acknowledged the concerns and said that the government would review the request. He indicated that the decision would be taken after consulting with the state’s law and order department, but did not commit to an immediate SIT appointment.
