A video that has been shared widely on social media depicts a man, identified by observers as an Aghori monk, standing close to a funeral pyre at the Chakrathirth cemetery in Ujjain. In the clip the individual is seen brandishing a sword near the burning pyre and allegedly taking bites of human remains.
The footage sparked immediate outrage among net users, prompting several complaints to local authorities. The Ujjain police registered a First Information Report (FIR) based on the video and have opened an investigation into possible violations of the Indian Penal Code and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.
Investigators are now seeking to identify the person shown in the recording. They have appealed to the public for any information that could lead to his arrest and have warned that any act of desecrating a corpse will be treated as a serious criminal offence.
