The 2026 edition of African Mining Week’s technical track highlighted strategies that extend value creation beyond the mine site, emphasizing sustainability and community integration.
African Mining Week (AMW) 2026 convened industry leaders, policymakers and technology providers to explore how mining operations can generate benefits that reach beyond the pit. The technical track featured sessions on renewable energy integration, waste‑to‑resource initiatives and digital tools that support post‑closure land use planning.
Speakers underscored the growing pressure from investors and regulators for mining companies to adopt circular‑economy models. Case studies from South Africa, Ghana and Zambia illustrated successful projects that transformed tailings into construction material and repurposed former mine sites for agriculture or renewable‑energy farms.
Organisers said the agenda reflects a broader shift in the sector toward responsible mining that aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Participants left with a set of actionable recommendations aimed at embedding post‑mine value chains into corporate strategies.
The event, held virtually and in Johannesburg, attracted over 1,200 delegates from more than 50 countries, signalling strong global interest in extending the economic life of mining assets beyond extraction.
AMW’s technical track will continue to monitor these trends, with a dedicated workshop planned for the 2027 conference to assess the impact of emerging technologies on post‑mine community development.
