Ten years after its launch, the UDAN scheme has linked dozens of tier‑2 and tier‑3 cities to major hubs, narrowing the distance between regional India and the rest of the country.

The Ude Desh Ka Aam Naagrik (UDAN) initiative, introduced in 2016, marks its ten‑year milestone with a noticeable expansion of regional air services. Since its inception, the programme has facilitated the development of new airports and the introduction of scheduled flights to previously underserved towns, enabling faster travel for business, education and tourism.

Government data indicate that the number of operational regional airports has risen significantly, and airlines have added multiple daily routes connecting smaller cities with metros such as Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata. This growth has lowered air‑fare barriers, making flying a viable option for a broader segment of the population.

Stakeholders credit UDAN with stimulating local economies, creating jobs in aviation and ancillary sectors, and encouraging investment in peripheral regions. The scheme’s success is also reflected in increased passenger footfall on regional routes, underscoring its role in knitting together India’s diverse geography.

Looking ahead, officials plan to sustain the momentum by allocating additional funds for airport infrastructure and incentivising airlines to launch new services under the scheme. The next decade is expected to deepen connectivity, further integrating remote areas into the national mainstream.
