The Andhra Pradesh government has dismissed 70 doctors who were absent from duty for more than a year, citing violation of service rules.
The health department of Andhra Pradesh issued an order this week dismissing seventy government doctors who failed to report for duty for over twelve months. The decision follows a series of notices sent to the doctors, which went unanswered, prompting the administration to invoke the state's service regulations.
According to the order, the doctors were found to be on unauthorized leave and did not provide any medical or personal justification for their prolonged absence. Under the Andhra Pradesh Civil Services (Discipline and Appeal) Rules, such non‑compliance warrants termination of service.
The government said the action is intended to reinforce accountability within the public health system and to free up vacant posts for qualified practitioners. It also announced that recruitment drives will be accelerated to fill the gaps created by the dismissals.
Representatives of the doctors' association have yet to comment publicly, but sources indicate that a legal challenge may be considered. The health department reaffirmed that the dismissals are final and that the affected positions will be re‑posted soon.
