A 53‑year‑old elephant named Joymoti, injured in the recent Nagaland floods, was airlifted to Vantara for treatment.
The forest department rescued a 53‑year‑old elephant, Joymoti, after the animal suffered multiple injuries during the severe floods that hit Nagaland earlier this week. Veterinarians assessed the extent of the injuries on site and determined that the elephant required advanced medical care not available locally.
To expedite treatment, officials arranged an airlift operation, transporting Joymoti by helicopter to the wildlife care facility at Vantara. The swift evacuation aimed to prevent further complications and improve the animal's chances of recovery.
Authorities said the rescue underscores the challenges posed by extreme weather events in the region and highlighted the department's readiness to mobilise resources for wildlife emergencies.
