A new 50‑bed annex in Tura has been added to expand maternal care services under Meghalaya’s health initiative.
The state government has opened a 50‑bed annex attached to the existing hospital in Tura, a town in western Meghalaya. The facility is dedicated to obstetric and post‑natal care, increasing the number of beds available for pregnant women and new mothers.
The annex forms a key component of Meghalaya’s broader maternal health push, which aims to improve access to quality care in remote and underserved areas. By expanding capacity in Tura, the initiative seeks to reduce the distance women must travel for safe deliveries and to lower the risk of complications.
Health officials expect the additional beds to help the state move closer to its targets for reducing maternal mortality and improving newborn outcomes. The new unit also provides space for trained staff to monitor high‑risk pregnancies and to deliver essential services such as antenatal counseling and emergency interventions.
