India marks the 50th anniversary of the Emergency, recalling the period when civil liberties were suspended and democratic institutions were curtailed.

On 25 June 1975, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi declared a state of emergency, citing internal disturbances. The proclamation suspended fundamental rights, curtailed press freedom, and allowed the government to detain individuals without trial.

The Emergency lasted until 21 March 1977, when elections restored democratic rule. During this period, thousands were arrested, censorship was imposed, and political opponents were silenced. The period remains a stark reminder of the fragility of democratic norms.

This year, the nation observes the 50th anniversary with memorials and discussions. Leaders, scholars, and civil society groups have convened to reflect on the lessons learned and to reaffirm commitments to safeguarding civil liberties.

The Economic Times Government section highlighted the event, noting that the Emergency’s legacy continues to influence contemporary debates on governance, media freedom, and the balance of power between the state and its citizens.
