A 480‑metre long, 36‑metre high bridge with eight pillars over the Sabarmati River has been finished, marking a key milestone in Gujarat’s high‑speed rail project.

The Gujarat segment of India’s high‑speed rail network has reached a significant construction milestone with the completion of a 480‑metre long bridge spanning the Sabarmati River. The structure rises 36 metres above the water and rests on eight massive pillars, designed to accommodate the bullet‑train’s required alignment and speed specifications. Engineers say the bridge will enable a seamless crossing for the Mumbai‑Ahmedabad corridor, reducing travel time between the two metros.

The bridge forms part of the broader Gujarat phase of the bullet‑train project, which includes several viaducts, tunnels and stations. According to the project’s latest progress report, about 70 % of civil works in the state have been finished, with track laying and signalling slated to begin later this year.

Local authorities have highlighted the bridge’s role in boosting regional connectivity and economic activity. Once operational, the high‑speed line is expected to cut the Ahmedabad‑Mumbai journey to under two hours, fostering greater business exchange and tourism.

Construction teams faced challenges such as the river’s seasonal flow and soil conditions, but modern engineering techniques and continuous monitoring ensured the bridge met safety and durability standards.

The completed bridge is now undergoing load testing before it is handed over to the National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited for final integration into the rail network.
