After an elephant died from an electric shock in Chandauli, a herd of 25 elephants arrived at the site to pay respects, according to forest officials.
An adult elephant in Chandauli, Uttar Pradesh, succumbed to a fatal electric shock while crossing a power line, prompting immediate attention from forest officials. The incident was reported early on, and the carcass was taken to a designated burial ground within the forest reserve.
Within hours, a group of about 25 elephants approached the burial site, moving slowly along the forest track. Forest Department Officer (DFO) S. Kumar confirmed that the herd appeared to be mourning their fallen companion, staying at the spot for a brief period before continuing their movement.
After a short pause, the elephants left the area and were last seen heading deeper into the reserve. Simultaneously, forest patrols reported spotting another separate herd of roughly 30 elephants roaming nearby, indicating normal activity in the region despite the recent death.
Officials emphasized that such gatherings are rare but documented in Indian wildlife behavior, reflecting strong social bonds among Asian elephants. The department is monitoring both groups to ensure their safety and to prevent further human‑wildlife conflicts.
