Punjab police have filed cases against 22 individuals accused of smuggling mobile phones and narcotics into state prisons.
Punjab police announced on Tuesday that a coordinated smuggling operation had succeeded in introducing mobile phones and illegal drugs into several state prisons. The investigation, which began after routine inspections uncovered contraband, led to the identification of a network that facilitated the illicit entry of the items.
According to officials, the phones were concealed in parcels and food deliveries, while the narcotics were hidden in clothing and other personal effects of inmates and visitors. Such contraband is known to fuel criminal activities inside jails, including organized crime and gang rivalries.
The police have filed criminal cases against 22 suspects, ranging from alleged couriers to facilitators within the prison system. The accused face charges under the Indian Penal Code and the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, and are expected to be presented before a court in the coming days.
