15 dead, 40 hospitalized after spurious liquor consumption in Sagar, MP

At least 15 people died and 40 were admitted to hospitals after drinking illicit liquor in Sagar, Madhya Pradesh, officials said.
Sagar district authorities confirmed that fifteen individuals lost their lives after consuming illegally manufactured liquor, while forty more were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment. The victims, ranging from young adults to middle‑aged men, reported symptoms of severe abdominal pain, vomiting and loss of consciousness before being taken to medical facilities.
Police have launched an investigation into the source of the spurious alcohol, seizing several bottles and containers believed to be part of the illicit batch. Preliminary tests suggest the presence of toxic methanol, a common contaminant in counterfeit spirits that can cause organ failure.
Health officials warned the public against purchasing unlicensed liquor and urged anyone experiencing similar symptoms to seek immediate medical attention. The district administration has also ordered a crackdown on illegal liquor operations in the region.
