A teenage girl, aged 14, was admitted to a government hospital in Shivpuri, Madhya Pradesh, after experiencing worsening abdominal symptoms. Physicians noted a progressive decline in her condition, prompting an urgent surgical intervention.
During the operation, surgeons discovered an unusually large mass composed entirely of hair, medically termed a trichobezoar, occupying a significant portion of the stomach cavity. The hairball measured several centimeters in length, explaining the severe abdominal discomfort and nutritional deficiencies observed.
Medical experts explained that trichobezoars are rare in adolescents and are typically linked to chronic hair ingestion, a behavior known as trichophagia. The condition can remain undetected for months, often presenting only when the mass interferes with normal digestive function.
Post‑operative reports indicated that the hairball was successfully removed and the patient is now under observation for recovery. Doctors advised close psychiatric follow‑up to address any underlying compulsive behavior and to prevent recurrence.
