12.89 lakh Jammu & Kashmir farmers now under crop insurance, says government to Parliament

The central government informed the Lok Sabha that more than 12.89 million farmers in Jammu and Kashmir have been enrolled in the crop‑insurance scheme.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare told members of the Lok Sabha that 12.89 lakh farmers in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir have been covered under the central crop‑insurance programme.
The enrollment is part of a broader effort to shield the region’s agriculture from climatic and market risks, especially after a series of erratic weather patterns that affected sowing and harvesting cycles. Under the scheme, the government subsidises premiums and promises compensation for verified crop losses.
According to officials, the insured cohort includes both small and marginal cultivators growing staple crops such as paddy, maize and wheat. The figures represent the latest data for the current financial year and mark a significant rise from previous coverage levels.
The ministry said it will continue to expand the insurance net, streamline claim verification and ensure timely payouts to protect farmers’ livelihoods.
