Tamil Nadu government narrows airport site options to Manellore, Cheyyur after Parandur plan shelved

The state government has shortlisted Manellore and Cheyyur in Tamil Nadu as potential locations for a new airport, discarding the earlier Parandur proposal.
The Tamil Nadu government announced that it has shortlisted two sites – Manellore in the north and Cheyyur in the south – for a greenfield airport to accommodate the state’s rising air‑traffic demand.
The decision comes after the Parandur project was dropped amid environmental clearances and local opposition. Officials said the new locations provide better connectivity and sufficient land.
Both sites will now undergo detailed feasibility studies covering land acquisition, runway specifications and environmental impact assessments before a final location is approved.
The move is part of a broader infrastructure push aimed at boosting tourism and industrial growth around the Chennai periphery and coastal zones.
