RJD MP Sudhakar Singh has sent a letter to Speaker Om Birla, alleging that his pre‑parliamentary custody in Nawada breaches parliamentary privileges and demanding an immediate investigation.
Sudhakar Singh, a Member of Parliament from the Rashtriya Janata Dal, informed Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla in writing that he was taken into police custody in Nawada just before his scheduled appearance in Parliament. The MP contended that the arrest infringes on the privileges granted to elected representatives, which protect them from undue legal interference while performing their duties.
In the letter, Singh requested a formal inquiry into the circumstances of his detention and asked the Speaker to direct the relevant authorities to submit a detailed report. He also urged immediate intervention to secure his release and to prevent any further obstruction of his parliamentary responsibilities.
The appeal highlights the tension between law‑enforcement actions at the district level and the constitutional safeguards afforded to legislators. The Speaker’s response and any subsequent action by the parliamentary privileges committee will determine how the matter proceeds.
