Punjab has accused Haryana of deflecting responsibility for farm‑field fires that worsen Delhi’s air, while Haryana responded by presenting its crop‑residue management model.
Punjab's agricultural department raised concerns after a series of farm‑field fires in Haryana contributed to Delhi's deteriorating air quality. The state officials alleged that Haryana was shifting blame onto Punjab for the pollution that affects the national capital.
In response, Haryana's government released details of its crop‑residue management model, emphasizing measures it has taken to curb stubble burning. The model includes mechanised residue collection, promotion of alternative uses for straw and incentives for farmers adopting cleaner practices.
Both states have faced repeated pressure from the central government and environmental groups to address the seasonal burning that spikes particulate matter levels. While Punjab demanded accountability, Haryana pointed to its ongoing initiatives as evidence of proactive steps toward sustainable residue handling.
The dispute underscores the broader challenge of coordinating inter‑state efforts to manage agricultural waste without compromising air quality across the region.
