Northern Frontier Railway has increased its electric traction to 30 train services, a move aimed at reducing carbon emissions across its network.
On Monday, the Northern Frontier Railway (NFR) announced that it has extended electric traction to 30 of its train services. The expansion follows a phased rollout that began last year and is part of the Indian Railways’ broader electrification strategy. By replacing diesel locomotives with electric ones, NFR aims to improve operational efficiency and reduce fuel costs.
The 30 services now include a mix of passenger and freight routes that traverse the region’s key corridors. According to NFR officials, the shift is expected to cut the railway’s carbon footprint by an estimated 20 percent over the next five years. The move also aligns with the government’s target to achieve 75 percent electrification of its network by 2025.
The railway’s chief executive said the expansion will also enhance reliability, as electric locomotives offer higher speeds and lower maintenance requirements. NFR plans to continue adding more services to its electric fleet as infrastructure and power supply improve.
