Mumbai's Air Quality Deteriorates, Now Worse Than Delhi's, Says India Today

India Today reports that the latest Air Quality Index (AQI) readings place Mumbai in the "very poor" category, overtaking Delhi’s level for the same period. The surge in particulate matter and nitrogen oxides has been linked to a combination of heavy traffic, construction dust and stagnant sea‑breeze conditions that failed to disperse pollutants. Health experts warn that prolonged exposure to such high AQI values can aggravate respiratory ailments, especially among vulnerable groups.

City officials have acknowledged the spike and said monitoring stations across the metropolis are providing real‑time data to guide mitigation measures. While Mumbai traditionally enjoys better air quality due to its coastal location, the recent trend underscores the growing challenge of urban pollution across India’s megacities.

Authorities are urging residents to limit outdoor activities during peak pollution hours and are exploring short‑term actions such as restricting diesel generators and enhancing public transport usage to curb emissions.
