Olympic medalist Mirabai Chanu from Manipur has been named captain of India's squad for the 2026 World Weightlifting Championships.

The Indian Weightlifting Federation announced that Mirabai Chanu, the Olympic silver medallist from Manipur, will lead the national contingent at the 2026 World Weightlifting Championships. The decision places the 28‑year‑old athlete at the helm of a squad that includes several rising stars and seasoned performers.
Chanu, who clinched gold at the 2022 Commonwealth Games and has consistently ranked among the world’s top lifters, said the appointment reflects her experience and commitment to the sport. She added that she will focus on fostering team cohesion and mentoring younger athletes during the preparatory camps.
The championships, scheduled for later next year, will bring together the world’s elite lifters across multiple weight categories. India hopes to improve its medal tally, building on the momentum generated by Chanu’s recent performances on the international stage.
Officials expect the team’s training program to intensify in the coming months, with Chanu playing a pivotal role in strategy and on‑floor execution. The federation aims to capitalize on her leadership to achieve a strong showing for India at the event.
