Union Culture and Tourism Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat addressed a gathering in Jodhpur on Thursday, taking aim at recent remarks made by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi about the ancient text Manusmriti.
Gandhi had suggested that the Manusmriti, a historical legal code, should be re‑examined in light of contemporary values, prompting a sharp response from the minister.
Shekhawat warned that commenting on historical and cultural subjects without understanding their original context and the circumstances of their time is inappropriate, labeling such distortion of history as reprehensible.
The minister emphasized the need for scholars and public figures to engage with heritage texts responsibly, urging a balanced discourse that respects both tradition and modern sensibilities.
