A sudden departure of eleven out of twelve legislators from a single party has left the Meghalaya assembly reeling, reducing the party’s strength to one seat.
The Meghalaya Legislative Assembly witnessed an unprecedented shift on Monday when eleven of the twelve elected members belonging to a single political party announced their exit from the party. Their resignation leaves the party with only one sitting MLA in the 60‑member house.
Political analysts say the move could destabilise the current coalition government, which relies on the party’s support to maintain a majority. With the balance of power altered, the ruling alliance may need to seek fresh partners or trigger a floor test to prove its command of the house.
State officials have yet to receive formal letters of resignation, and the Speaker is expected to schedule a meeting to verify the defections under the anti‑defection law. Depending on the outcome, by‑elections or a re‑configuration of the cabinet could follow.
