The Hemant-led Jharkhand administration announced it will withdraw allocations for mines that are currently non‑operational and will put 62 coal and 49 non‑coal mining blocks up for auction.
Jharkhand's state cabinet, headed by Chief Minister Hemant Soren, issued a notice that all allocations for mines that are presently shut down will be cancelled. The decision covers both coal and non‑coal mineral blocks that were previously earmarked for private operators.
According to the data released, out of 165 coal blocks allotted in the state, 62 are currently non‑functional. In the broader mineral portfolio, 85 blocks covering iron ore, bauxite, copper, gold and other resources have been assigned, of which 49 are idle.
The government plans to re‑auction the 62 coal and 49 other mining leases through a transparent bidding process, aiming to attract fresh investment and revive production. Officials said the move is intended to ensure that mineral resources are utilized efficiently and to generate additional revenue for the state.
State officials have not disclosed the exact timeline for the auctions, but they indicated that the process will commence after the necessary clearances are obtained, with the expectation that new operators will commence extraction within a stipulated period.
