The Jammu & Kashmir government is reviewing a draft media policy that will extend regulation to social media platforms, officials said.
Srinagar, Oct 29 — The Directorate of Information in Jammu & Kashmir has announced that a draft of a new media policy is currently under examination. The draft proposes to bring social media platforms within the ambit of the state's media regulations, marking a significant expansion of existing rules that traditionally covered print and broadcast media.
According to the director, the policy aims to ensure that online content adheres to the same standards of accuracy, decency and national security as other media forms. The draft also outlines procedures for licensing, content monitoring and penalties for violations, though specific details are still being finalised.
Stakeholders, including digital news outlets and social media users, have been invited to submit feedback before the policy is formally presented to the state cabinet. The move reflects a broader trend among Indian states to address the rapid growth of digital communication and its impact on public discourse.
The Directorate has indicated that the final version will be released after incorporating suggestions from the consultation process, and will be enforced once approved by the state government.
