The India Meteorological Department has forecast a cyclonic storm to affect Odisha within the next day, prompting a statewide alert.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) released an advisory today indicating that a cyclonic storm is likely to develop over the Bay of Bengal and make landfall in Odisha within the next 24 hours. Meteorologists highlighted the rapid intensification of the system and warned of strong gusty winds, heavy rainfall and possible storm surges along the coastline.
Coastal districts such as Puri, Jagatsinghpur and Kendrapara are expected to bear the brunt of the weather event. Local authorities have begun pre‑emptive measures, including securing vulnerable infrastructure, readying relief camps and alerting fishing communities to keep vessels ashore.
The Odisha State Disaster Management Authority (OSDMA) has activated its emergency response plan, urging residents in low‑lying areas to stay indoors, stock essential supplies and follow instructions from officials. Early evacuation orders are being issued for settlements most at risk of flooding.
IMD’s forecast follows a pattern of frequent cyclonic activity in the region during the post‑monsoon season, underscoring the need for continued vigilance and community preparedness.
Officials advise the public to monitor official bulletins, keep mobile phones charged and avoid travel in affected zones until the storm passes.
