The Sikkim High Court has directed that experts from NHPC, IRCON and IIT be incorporated into the state’s climate‑resilient road committee, aiming to strengthen technical inputs for road projects.
In a recent ruling, the Sikkim High Court directed the state government to incorporate specialists from the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC), Infra‑Structure Development Company (IRCON) and the Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) into the committee responsible for planning climate‑resilient roads.
The decision follows concerns that existing road projects in the mountainous state may not fully account for the impacts of climate change, such as increased rainfall, landslides and glacial melt. By bringing in experts with experience in hydropower, infrastructure and advanced engineering, the committee aims to design roads that can withstand extreme weather events.
The inclusion is expected to enhance technical scrutiny of road proposals, improve coordination between state agencies and national bodies, and accelerate the delivery of safer, more resilient transportation corridors across Sikkim.
