The Haryana government has announced a complete prohibition on firecrackers in all National Capital Region districts, effective before the upcoming Diwali celebrations.

The state administration of Haryana issued an order on Tuesday prohibiting the manufacture, sale, and use of firecrackers in every district that falls under the National Capital Region (NCR). The directive comes a few weeks before Diwali, aiming to curb the sharp rise in air‑pollution levels that typically follows the festival.

Authorities have empowered the state pollution control board and local police to enforce the ban, with penalties ranging from fines of up to INR 10,000 to seizure of illegal stock. Vendors found selling crackers after the enforcement date will face immediate confiscation of goods and possible prosecution.

Local residents and shop owners expressed mixed reactions. While many welcomed the move as a step toward cleaner air and reduced health risks, some small traders warned of financial losses, noting that Diwali sales of fireworks constitute a significant portion of their income.

The ban aligns with earlier temporary restrictions imposed in previous years and is expected to contribute to a measurable decline in particulate matter concentrations across the NCR during the festive period.
