The Gujarat government has made it compulsory for all schools to employ a qualified counsellor and has introduced student wellness teams to support mental health.

The Gujarat government has announced that every school in the state will now be required to have a qualified counsellor on staff. The decision comes amid growing concerns over student mental health and the need for timely support.

Under the new policy, schools will also form student wellness teams that include teachers, counsellors, and health professionals. These teams will monitor students’ well‑being, identify early signs of distress, and coordinate interventions.

Implementation is slated to begin with the 2025-26 academic year. The state education department will provide training, resources, and guidelines to ensure smooth rollout across government and private institutions.

The move is part of Gujarat’s broader effort to strengthen the education system and promote holistic development of students.
