In October, Meghalaya's Goods and Services Tax receipts rose by 35%, making it the third‑largest growth among northeastern states.

The Meghalaya Department of Revenue reported a 35 per cent increase in Goods and Services Tax (GST) collections for the month of October, according to data released on Tuesday. The surge lifted the state’s GST receipts to a level that ranks third in growth rate among the eight states of India’s Northeast region.

State officials attributed the rise to higher compliance among businesses and an expanded tax base following recent fiscal reforms. Compared with its neighbours, Assam and Tripura posted lower percentage gains, while Manipur and Nagaland recorded marginal increases.

The significant uptick is expected to bolster the state’s fiscal position ahead of the upcoming budget cycle, providing additional resources for infrastructure and social welfare projects.
