The Odisha disaster management authority has issued a flood alert for Ganjam and Gajapati districts as Cyclone Arnab intensifies over the Bay of Bengal.
The Odisha State Disaster Management Authority (OSDMA) announced a flood alert for the coastal districts of Ganjam and the interior district of Gajapati on Thursday, citing the rapid intensification of Cyclone Arnab over the Bay of Bengal.
Meteorological forecasts predict heavy rainfall of up to 200 mm in the next 24 hours, which could cause the Brahmani, Rushikulya and other local rivers to swell beyond danger levels.
Authorities have pre‑positioned rescue teams, sandbags and relief supplies, and are preparing temporary shelters in schools and community halls for residents in low‑lying areas.
Officials urged people to stay indoors, avoid riverbanks, and follow instructions from local officials, while the state’s police and disaster response teams remain on standby for evacuation if needed.
