Snowfall has begun early this season, covering the high‑altitude areas of Nathu La, Gnathang Valley and Kupup in East Sikkim.

The Indian Meteorological Department reported that an early snowfall started across several high‑altitude locations in East Sikkim on Monday. The cold front brought snow to the Nathu La mountain pass, the Gnathang Valley and the Kupup region, which are situated at elevations above 3,500 metres.

Local residents and tourists in the area observed a sudden white blanket covering the terrain, prompting authorities to issue travel advisories for the pass and nearby routes. The snowfall is expected to be temporary, with temperatures likely to rise later in the week.

Officials said the early snow does not pose a major threat to infrastructure, but they are monitoring road conditions and have deployed teams to clear any accumulations that could impede movement.

The event marks an early onset compared to the usual winter pattern in the region, where significant snowfall typically begins in late November or December.

Authorities continue to advise commuters to check weather updates before travelling to the high‑altitude zones.
